Summer 2000, This photo has been featured in several places, including the documentary “The Original Chicano”. Just last year it was used as a poster when the documentary premiered in Dublin, Ireland. Documentary director Dan Guerrero was the featured speaker. Very proud to have met Lalo and to have Dan as one of my dearest friends.

HEAD, my reoccurring Prince, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and related club night is proud 2 present…

THE fDELUXE & THE ORIGINAL 7VEN RECORD RELEASE PARTY!

fDELUXE: After a 26 year wait, St. Paul Peterson, Susannah Melvoin, Jellybean Johnson & Eric Leeds have released a brand new CD called “Gaslight” that continues the legacy not only of their former self: The Family, but of the Minneapolis sound & true funk they were instrumental N shaping in the 80s. Prince was the mastermind behind the formation of The Family and wrote all but 1 song on the album, arranging, producing and creating each song. Now, with fDELUXE, St. Paul, Susannah, Jellybean and Eric have taken complete control of the band, renaming themselves, yet retaining all the funk & MPLS sound of The Family we all love so much! N the process, they’ve made a better album themselves than if Prince had been involved.

THE ORIGINAL 7VEN: After a 21 year wait, the band formerly known as The Time with ALL 7 original members: Morris Day, Jerome Benton, Jesse Johnson, Monte Moir, Jellybean Johnson, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis have taken control of their future & destiny, writing, producing and performing their very 1st album without the help of Prince or the name The Time. “Condensate” is the name of the CD and it’s funky as only The Original 7ven can make it.

Bringing the live funk to an already funk-ilicious night is the live music of FUNKY SOUL BROTHA who’ll B bringing it full stop with 2 live musical sets of Prince covers & other soulful jams around 10:30 and midnight.

This fDELUXE & ORIGINAL 7VEN Record Release Party will spotlight all of the music & visuals of fDELUXE, their former incarnation as The Family with Jerome Benton N the mix as well as the music, visuals and videos of ORIGINAL 7VEN & their former self The Time!

Special raffle giveaways will happen that nite of fDELUXE & ORIGINAL 7VEN merch & CDs. Also, raffled will B copies of the re-release deluxe edition of Andre Cymone’s “AC” album, released 4 the first time on CD. Raffle tickets will B available throughout the nite with Rita, the lovely door lady 4 $1 a ticket. The more U buy, the more chance U’ll have 2 win!

Mixed with the music, visuals & videos of fDELUXE (& The Family) & ORIGINAL 7VEN (& The Time) will B of course Prince, Jam & Lewis and related including the Minneapolis funk of Sheila E., Jill Jones, Alexander O’Neal, Cherrelle, Apollonia 6, Vanity 6, Jesse Johnson, Morris Day, Mazarati, NPG, Chaka Khan, Sheena Easton, Madhouse, The Revolution, Dez Dickerson, Wendy & Lisa, New Edition, St. Paul, Ingrid Chavez and…more.

The club will B decorated as always with lots of memorabilia from the Minneapolis sound era, past 2 present. Think Paisley Park meets Flyte Tyme with fDELUXE (The Family) & ORIGINAL 7VEN (The Time) being the center of attention. Posters, paintings, album covers & pictures.

Shakira! Latina Roquera Sets the Stage on Fire

After a fantastic set by opening group, Son By 4, Latina pop rock artist Shakira appeared on stage like a Goddess — her body encapsulated in what looked like a futuristic cocoon. Her silhouette alone drove the audience crazy. The music started, the lights flashed, and our heroine stood on a platform like a virginal apparition meets rock and roll diva. She was dressed in what looked like blue snakeskin, form-fitted pants, a blue tank top, and a matching waist wrap-around to give a Middle Eastern touch to her gorgeous Latin figure. Her new blonde hair was wild and free, just like her spirit on stage when she sang with power, danced, and kicked through amazing versions of “Si Te Vas,” “Ciega Sordomuda,” and the mesmerizing “Ojos Asi,” just to name a few. For the most part, the show covered the material from her 1998 album, “Donde Estan Los Ladrones?” and a few older favorites like “Estoy Aqui,” from her 1996 disc, “Pies Descalzos.” For the fans that fell in love with her MTV Unplugged renditions, she played fantastic acoustic versions of songs like “Moscas En La Casa” and the very popular raggae version of “No Creo.” Words or videos really can’t describe how theatrical, dramatic, innocent, humble, and commanding Shakira is on stage. This tour is not to be missed!
